Bringing Literacy Home

In Santa Cruz County, CA, 6,000 young children of migrant workers, over the last four years, were introduced to the "joys of reading" by volunteers from Raising A Reader.

Raising a Reader formed in 1999 because nearly half of all U.S. children entering kindergarten lack the early reading skills needed for success in school, according to the website. By 2010, 811,000 were reached, with a long term goal to reach one million children.

Volunteers and community organizations around the United States participate by raising funds donated to Head Start programs or by purchasing and donating book bags filled with books for parents to read to their children.
