The Big Picture: Reuse & Share

What started as a computer recycling center has developed a larger focus:"Providing technology and training to children and adults who have barriers to employment and education, while protecting our environment and community from hazardous waste," the mission statement of NextStep Recycling in Eugene, Or.

Since 1999, NextStep has accepted donations of hundreds of thousands of computers and other electronic devices. In the process, we have put thousands of pieces of equipment back into use in the community—including 28,000 refurbished computer systems (current to April, 2012) and hundreds of items sold at an extremely low cost through our ReUse Store—and recycled over 10,200,000 pounds of electronic waste (e-waste). More than 1700 volunteers have donated over 136,000 hours of service refurbishing and recycling computers. 8,500 individuals have enhanced their employment marketability through experiential service learning and extensive training by our staff.
